Terrace Hill, like so many historic sites, relies on volunteer help to open its doors to the public.

Terrace Hill will host an informational coffee for new volunteers on Thursday, February 22, from 9:30 to 10:30 am in the Dining Room of Terrace Hill. We welcome you to attend if you are interested in learning more about volunteering at Terrace Hill.

To attend, please RSVP by February 20 to barbara.willey@governor.iowa.gov or call 515-281-7205.

The following are some of the ways volunteers contribute at Terrace Hill:

Docent
Guided tours of Terrace Hill are offered March through December, Tuesday through Saturday, at 10:30 am and 12:00 pm. Docents should enjoy working with people of all ages, have good public speaking skills, and be willing to learn about the history of Terrace Hill along with the details of the Residence's architecture and interior collection. A docent must also be able to walk and stand comfortably.

Kitchen & Special Events
Volunteers for special events assist with teas, receptions, and special dinners. They help with set-up, serving, and clean-up following the event. Volunteers must be able to walk and stand comfortably and be able to go up and down stairs.

Garden
Garden volunteers have flexible hours. Planting is done once a year in May. Throughout the growing season (ideally on a regular, weekly basis) volunteers are needed to weed, deadhead flowering plants, and maintain the garden beds. Garden volunteers must be capable of performing general gardening activities as directed by the groundskeeper.
